What is a hair system and how is it fitted?

A hair system (also called a hair replacement system or hair integration system) is a very fine base with hair that’s attached to the scalp, without surgery, to cover the area where hair is missing. Here we explain what it’s made of, how it’s fitted and what care it needs.

Types of hair system by base

It has two parts: the base, which is the piece in contact with your head, and the hair, which is knotted or injected into that base. The most common bases are:

  • Skin or polyurethane: a thin, skin-like film. It’s easy to clean and the attachment grips well.
  • Lace (mesh): a very fine, breathable fabric. It’s widely used at the hairline because it looks very natural.
  • Mono: a slightly tougher lace, made to last.
  • Hybrid: these combine materials, for example lace at the front and skin on the sides.

Partial or full hair system

A partial hair system covers just one area: the temples, the hairline or the crown. A full hair system covers the whole top of the head when hair loss is extensive. In the consultation we see which area needs covering in your case.

How a hair system is fitted

  1. Consultation: we look at the area to be covered, the colour and density of your hair, and your daily routine. It’s free.
  2. Preparation: we prepare the area and shape the hair system to fit your head.
  3. Attachment: we attach it with adhesive or with special hair system tape, depending on the base and what you need.
  4. Blending: we cut and style the hair on the system together with yours so the join doesn’t show.

You walk out with hair the same day. At Crinova Hair Center we fit hair systems in Barcelona, at the centre or at your home.

Does it hurt? Do I need surgery?

No. The hair system is attached to the skin, with no needles or surgery. It isn’t a medical treatment: if you have a scalp condition, check with your dermatologist first.

What maintenance it needs

With use, the attachment loses its grip and the base builds up oil and dirt. That’s why it has to be removed, cleaned and fitted again every 7–14 days, depending on the base: we explain more in hair system maintenance. The hair system itself lasts between 5 and 7 months.

Hair system, wig or toupee: how they differ

  • A wig usually covers the whole head and is easy to put on and take off.
  • A traditional toupee is usually held on with clips and covers in a more obvious way.
  • A hair system uses a very fine base that’s attached to the skin with adhesive or tape, covers only the area where hair is missing and blends in with your own hair: that’s why it looks more natural.

We compare them in detail in men’s toupee or wig, or a hair system.

Frequently asked questions

Can I live a normal life with a hair system?

Yes, a completely normal life: you can shower, do sport, go to the pool or the beach and sleep with it on. You just need to keep up with maintenance.

Can you wear one with very little hair of your own?

Yes. The base covers the area where hair is missing and the hair on the system blends in with yours.

What are the downsides?

Three main ones: maintenance every 7–14 days, the fact that it’s a recurring cost, and having to replace it every 5–7 months. We tell you straight in the downsides of hair systems.

How much does a hair system cost?

At our Barcelona centre, fitting with the hair system included costs 530 € and each maintenance session 50 €. The consultation is free. We break it down in how much a hair system costs.

Where can I see hair system models?

In our online shop, Crinova Hair System: we select them, test them and control their quality ourselves. You’ll find them by base type, size and colour.
